Last time I really shopped my auto insurance was several years back. At that time, I was shocked to see that my move, from an "active" Aurora neighborhood to a quiet Denver neighborhood, was going to cause my insurance rate to skyrocket. I ended up switching to a company that didn't charge me an arm and a leg for living in Denver County. Back then I swore that I would shop my auto insurance each year, but I forgot. When I recently decided to take about 5 minutes to compare my auto insurance policy to those being offered by other providers, I was initially thrilled to find that my new insurance provider, Electric Insurance Company, would actually increase my coverage and save 25% on my premium. The savings to me amounts to $45 a month!
After the elation died down a bit, reality set in. I realized that I've been paying way too much for 2 years or more. In our household, $45 a month is a significant figure. I pulled out my calculator and did the math. Over 2 years, I lost nearly $1,100 by failing to shop my auto insurance policy. That eleven hundred dollars could have been used for several nice nights on the town here in Metro Denver. Heck, we could have escaped Denver in favor of a long weekend in Vegas.
The best part about shopping auto and home owners/renters insurance now is that it can usually be done in just a few minutes on a home computer. It's quick and relatively painless. While we found our best deal at Electric Insurance Company, there are many great insurance companies that issue quotes online.
I think I've really learned my lesson after this experience. I've already marked my 2007 calendar (which was one of the FREE Deals of the Week from Vista Print) with a reminder to shop our insurance policies!
