A while back, we featured PrivatePhone as a Great Denver Deal. As the name suggests, the service helps users to protect their privacy, online or off, with a virtual telephone contact point. While the FREE service goes directly to voicemail, they do offer an inexpensive forwarding upgrade which allows users to actually take incoming calls live. PrivatePhone was (and still is) a fantastic deal, but we've found an even newer and better FREE Telephone Deal.

GrandCentral offers many of the same basic features as Private Phone and a whole lot more! Like the other guys, GrandCentral provides users with a FREE local phone number. They don't have phone numbers in all area codes (for instance, Wyoming is not yet included); however, they do have numbers available in 34 states, including Colorado. While they don't presently offer numbers in the 719 area, the 303, 720 and 970 calling areas are covered. At sign-up, users can choose their own local phone number from a fairly extensive list. Like PrivatePhone, this is a virtual telephone line. By that I mean that there is no actual wired telephone line into your home or office. To fully utilize the features GrandCentral has to offer, you will need to forward your new virtual number to at least one established cell phone, land line or voip number.

After choosing a phone number, you'll find that GrandCentral is loaded with amazing features. First, users can accept an unlimited number of live incoming phone calls. The system is set up to allow incoming calls to be forwarded to up to 6 different numbers (home, cell, office, etc.). If an incoming call is initially answered on a cell phone, the GrandCentral user can save cell minutes by transferring the call, with the touch of a button, to one of his other (up to 5) phone lines.

The GrandCentral system also offers:

  • Caller ID
  • Call Screening
  • Telemarketer (SPAM) Blocking
  • Check Voicemail by Phone or Online
  • Online Contact List
  • Selective Call Routing (to voicemail)
GrandCentral users also have the ability to return calls, when a message is left, and place calls to numbers in the online contact list. When outbound calls are placed, GrandCentral calls the user (at the number or numbers on the forwarding list). When the user answers, the system dials the other party. The called party sees the user's GrandCentral phone number on his Caller ID. The system also allows users to instantly record a conversation (either inbound or outbound) with the press of a button. As we've tested the feature, the audio quality of the recording is excellent.

If there is any room for improvement in the system, it would be in the initial forwarding of the call; it's not seamless. Callers can tell that the call has been forwarded. Overall, GrandCentral is a fantastic service, and it's absolutely FREE for the moment, while the system is still in Beta testing. The company says that they will always offer a FREE service option, though some of the premium features listed here may eventually be available only to paying customers. To get started, all you need is a Name & Email Address. Sign Up HERE.

PS: The folks at GrandCentral also have big hearts. They support an organization called Project CARE (Communications and Respect for Everybody) which helps the less fortunate in the San Francisco area to stay in touch and get back on their feet.
